"WHALES,
WHALES AND MORE WHALES"
In the middle of August, a team of five whale watchers
came from Queensland to Levuka to conduct a month long
survey on whales in the area during their annual
migration. They were here for a week at the same time
last year doing a small feasibility study. This year they
conducted a more in depth study and were delighted with
the results.
They spotted humpback, sperm, pilot and false killer
whales, as well as spinner dolphins. The whale shark
pictured above was spotted only a week after they had
left. Everyone in Levuka is now excited about the
prospect of whalewatching for tourists during their
migration, which starts around August and continues for a
few months.

CABINET
MEETING IN LEVUKA
The 22nd of September saw the Prime Minister and members
of his Cabinet arrive in Levuka for a Cabinet meeting, to
be held the next day. This is an initiative of the Prime
Minister to bring the government to the people, and
enable local people to make submissions on various issues
to the government without having to travel to Suva.
The town was buzzing with so many dignitaries here -
something new for Levuka and and a great sign of a
concerned government.

THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN COOK (Cruises)
Almost one year to the day, the "MV Reef Escape", operated by Captain Cook Cruises out of Nadi, returned to Levuka as part of a seven day cruise throughout the islands. The passsengers again availed themselves of the opportunity to take the various tours on offer - a village trip, an historical town walking tour, morning tea with two of the town's characters, and diving. The highlight of the day was the visit to Marist Convent Primary School, where the passengers were entertained by the children, then taken on a tour of the school. Being a multi-cultural school, the children performed traditional items relating to their ethnic background - Fijian, Indian, Rotuman, Tongan, Puerto Rican, as well as a liturgical dance. We are looking forward to next April when the "MV Reef Escape" returns to Levuka, so we can share more of our wonderful island with the passengers.
