Now that's what I call a fish!!!

Epeli, who is a member of our staff, spends most of his spare time fishing. His patience paid off early in August when he caught this 24.5kg 'saqa' - beautiful fish, beautiful eating. He went trolling just outside the main reef in front of town and caught this fish using a hand line and pulled it in without a gaff.
There are many varieties and sizes of fish in the waters of Ovalau. There are no guarantees that you will catch a fish every time you go out, but more often than not you will come home with something.

Thar she blows!

HAVE A WHALE OF A TIME
In early August, David Paton and Nadine Gibbs came from Australia and spent two weeks based in Levuka looking for humpback whales. They were following up on a study done in 1950 of humpback whales in the waters around Ovalau.
The coconut wireless did not take long to spread the news to the villages around the island and whale spotting began in earnest. There were several sightings, causing a lot of excitement around the island. David and Nadine also used hydrophones to record humpback whales singing - probably the first such recording in the waters of Fiji.
When David and Nadine left, they were confident that they had enough evidence to support a full scale survey this time next year - subject to getting funding. We wish you both well in sourcing your funds.
If you are reading this and can help with funding for this important project, please let us know and we can put you in touch with David.

Living in Levuka does funny things to you!!!

No, John has not gone strange, nor is he suffering from being too long in the tropics. His moment of madness was all in aid of fundraising for the Marist Convent School annual bazaar, held on Saturday, 14 September. A great day was had by all. Entertainment was provided courtesy of special items by the different classes and a special dance by the teachers.
Fundraising has been going on for most of the year with the bazaar being the culmination of great efforts by the children and their parents. A sum in excess of $23,000.00 was raised - a huge achievement given that it is only a small school and a small community. Well done to everyone who was involved.
