Suli (on the left) and Sau

In the last few years, quite a number of young Fijians have joined the British Army. Their dedication and commitment are qualities much admired and make them excellent ambassadors for this great country.
Suli, who works for Levuka Homestay, is pictured above with his cousin Sau, who left the next day to join the British Army. It was a sad occasion for Suli to say goodbye to his best friend.
Sau, we are all proud of you and wish you every success in your chosen career.

Guests of honour

The annual Interzone Athletics Carnival was held in early April at St John's College, Cawaci. It was hosted by Delana Methodist School, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary in June.
The guests of honour were Ralph and Connie Ward and their family. Ralph is the General Manager (Levuka) for Bumble Bee Corporation from the USA. They are involved in the operation of the Pacific Fishing Company here, and through Ralph, have provided significant support to our small community.
Thanks Bumble Bee and thanks Ralph for your ongoing contribution. It is greatly appreciated.

Sam and Ian with Joeli, the Principal of Delana Methodist School

Part of the opening ceremony for the Athletics Carnival was the performance of a Meke (traditional Fijian dance) by students and staff of Delana Methodist School. Sam and Ian, pictured above are GAP volunteers from England. They are here for seven months, assisting the teachers at Delana and were proud to be "honorary Fijians" for the meke.

The Baton with the staff of Levuka Homestay

On Monday 6th May, the Commonwealth Games Baton came to Levuka as part of its journey around the British Commonwealth countries. The Baton contains a message from the Queen who will read it at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in July.
There was great excitement as the Baton went through various villages, then through the town and also to other places of interest. When it stopped at these places, there were small ceremonies of welcome and many people were able to hold the Baton. We were privileged to be on the list of places of interest - the other places all had past historical significance, while we have become part of the modern history of Levuka.
It was most appropriate that the Baton came to Levuka, given the fact the Fiji became part of the British Commonwealth when the Deed of Cession was signed in Levuka on 10th October 1874.
Having the Baton tour the island was an honour and a great community builder. The thrilled look on people's faces was something to behold.
