ANOTHER
LANDMARK GOES UP IN FLAMES
Just
before midnight on Saturday, 31 January 2004, fire
destroyed the Burns Philp (South Seas) Ltd building at
the southern end of Levuka town. This was the first Burns
Philp building in Fiji. It housed the Westpac Bank, the
Morris Hedstrom Supermarket and the Air Fiji office.
We are all grateful that no one was killed or injured,
but at the same time the whole island is shocked and
saddened by this tragic event. As yet no cause for the
fire has been determined.
Our thanks go to our National Fire Authority Officer and
his team of auxiliary fire fighters (all volunteers) who
managed to contain the fire and stop it spreading
throughout the town. Their efforts at the time in
preventing a potential national disaster is testimony to
the many hours of training they have done. While we do
not want to have to experience any more instances like
this, we can all rest assured that we are in good hands.
FIJI BROADCASTING COMPANY LTD TURNS 50
It is very difficult to get a good television reception in Levuka, so we all rely on the radio for our news and entertainment. Fiji Broadcasting Company Ltd is the parent company of Bula 100 FM. We were pleased to have as guests Viti Browne (Breakfast Show host) and Hudson Mitchell (Sales and Marketing. It is FBCL's 50th anniversary later this year, so they came over to do interviews with regular listeners and noteworthy citizens of Levuka and surrounding areas. The stories told by the locals will be used as part of the radio station's celebrations.
It was a great opportunity for local people to see the faces behind the radio, and also for Viti and Hudson to meet people whom they only talk to when they ring up for dedications.
